    History of St. Thomas Parish

The Catholic Diocese of Kano began in the second decade of the 20th century. In the year 1915, many Catholics were resident in Kano. The first baptism, which was that of Anna Beecroft, administered by Revd Fr Alphonse Berlioux, a priest from Lokoja, took place on 24th August, 1915 as recorded in the Baptism register of St. Joseph Parish, Kaduna. Between 1926 and 1918, another priest, Revd Fr Berengario Cermenati severally paid visits to Kano. However, history had it that Christianity entered Kano in the 16th century through the Trans-Saharan trade route, mostly patronized by Christian communities of the River Nile region. An attempt which was recorded by Franciscan Friar, Brother Peter Farde OFM from Belgium in 1988, who incidentally was captured at Sea and made to become a slave to a Muslim master in Agadez, North of Kano.

According to recorded history, the official founder of the Catholic Church in Kano was Msgr. Oswald Waller SMA, who first visited Kano on December 15, 1918. His visit was precipitated by the call and yearning of Catholic Clerks and traders resident in Kano, who began to make series of requests for the building of a Catholic Church in Kano. After his visit, Msgr. Waller SMA applied for the permission to build a church in Kano in1919. However, his request was later granted on the April 13, 1922.

    ST. THOMAS CATHOLIC CHURCH

The birth of St. Thomas Catholic Church can be traced to the year 1978. Worshippers in the Church were under Our Lady of Fatima that in turn, was under the Kaduna Arc Diocese shepherded by the then Bishop Peter Jatau. It was a small Hausa speaking community carved out in order to fully celebrate masses in the local dialect with Rev Fr Stephen Atama as its first priest. It formally began its masses at St. Thomas Secondary School Hall.  Revd Fr Stephen Atama erected the pillars for the church and was later roofed within the period for use as a place of worship in 1979 and the small community was elevated to the status of a Parish by his Lordship, Bishop Peter Jatau in that year.

    THE CHOIR

The Parish continued to grow with the emergence of the first ever choir that still exist, namely the St. Stephen Hausa Choir which was basically dominated by members of the Hausa speaking community. With new developments in the Parish, other choir groups emerged given the provisions for additional masses in the Parish and as a result of other indigenes resident in Kano that joined the community. Following this, other adult choirs that emerged. They were: the present St. Cecilia Choir, the Children Choir, now referred to as Angelic Voices Choir and the Royal Voices Choir founded and established by Revd Fr. Joseph Idomele in the mid-90s. These various individual choirs have exceptionally displayed great immense collection of songs to the admiration of many in Kano Diocese. These four choir groups are collectively called the St. Augustine Choir.

    STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PARISH

The structural developments in the Parish could be traced back to its origin, i.e. the foundation laying stone of the Church. This event led to the building structure the Parish has today as a place of worship. From the erection of the old Parish House, it never ceased from having one major project or another with the emergence of wonderful priests that have served in the Parish to date. Notable of such projects and structures are:

The Parish Secretariat and Hall: It was built and commissioned during Revd Fr Michael Adefemi Adebola, the present Vicar General/Cathedral Administrator. Late Bishop Patrick Sheehan laid the foundation stone. The project committee was chaired by Engr. John Okorie with Chief Gabriel Musa, Mr. Edwin Kpev, and Mr. Charles Baaki as members. It was formally commissioned by His Lordship Most Revd Dr John Namaza Niyiring OSA on July 20, 2008.

The Nursery and Primary School: It was founded and established by Revd Fr Linus Ubale with the following committee members: Mr. Mark Asu-Obi (KSM) as chairman, Dr. Clement Igbaji as secretary with other members. It was formally commissioned and began operation on August 29, 2007 with Mrs. Mary Anyebe, Mr. Emmanuel Omoh, Mrs. Grace Ogwola, etc. as the pioneer teachers.

The Parish was christened “The Royal Parish of St. Thomas Catholic Church  by Revd Fr Joseph Idomele having observed its unique nature comprising different ethnic groups, tribes and cultures with the first ever enculturation masses in the parish to celebrate its uniqueness amongst other parishes in the Diocese.

The Interlocking of the Parish: This was another major project the Parish witnessed during the time of Very Revd Fr James Gajere during his second transfer to the Parish that has today become the beauty to behold and a pace-setter in the Diocese.

Projects under Revd Fr Charles Agunmadu:  He carried out many major reconstruction and development works in the Parish ranging from the church building structure, instrumental gadgets, replacement of Church ceiling, pews, flowering, pavilion, chapels, generating plant, boreholes, etc. The Fathers’ House was a dream project he initiated before his sudden transfer back to his home Diocese of Ilorin. The then Acting Parish Priest, Revd Fr Mathew Mato Danlami continued by clearing the land for a proper  laying of the foundation stone by his Lordship Most Revd Dr. John Namaza Niyiring OSA for the project. Revd Fr Michael Okoko Onoja continued the implementation of project by roofing the house and fixing of doors and window. He also constructed the pavilion outside to boost the capacity of accommodating worshippers by the Church building.

Projects under Revd Fr Yari Felix Chom: He is the present Parish Priest and has successfully completed the My Fathers’ House project leading to what is today seen as the best Parish/Fathers’ House in the whole Diocese of Kano and perhaps in the Kaduna Ecclesiastical Province. This architectural edifice is a beauty to behold. He has also given the Church building a new face look, the Parish rest room is under construction and renovation of the Nursery and Primary School structurally an academically has been completed and currently competes with other schools around the area.

    WHO IS SAINT THOMAS?

St. Thomas was born a Jew and was called to be one of the twelve Apostles. His birth and death dates are unknown, but his feast day is celebrated on July 3rd. He lived before the formal establishment of the Catholic Church but is recognized as the patron saint of architects. He was a dedicated but impetuous follower of Christ. When Jesus said He was returning to Judea to visit His sick friend Lazarus, Thomas immediately exhorted the other Apostles to accompany Him on the trip which involved certain danger and possible death because of the mounting hostility of the authorities. At the Last Supper, when Christ told His disciples that He was going to prepare a place for them to which they also might come because they knew both the place and the way, Thomas pleaded that they did not understand and received the beautiful assurance that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

St. Thomas is best known for his role in verifying the Resurrection of his Master. Thomas' unwillingness to believe that the other Apostles had seen their risen Lord on the first Easter Sunday earned him the title of the "doubting Thomas." Eight days later, on Christ's second apparition, Thomas was gently rebuked for his skepticism until he was furnished with the evidence he had demanded by seeing in Christ's hands the point of the nails. Thomas even put his fingers in the nail holes and his hand into Christ's side. After verifying the wounds were true, St. Thomas became convinced of the reality of the Resurrection and exclaimed, "My Lord and My God" thus, making a public Profession of Faith in the Divinity of Jesus. St. Thomas is also mentioned as being present at another Resurrection appearance of Jesus - at Lake Tiberias, when a miraculous catch of fish occurred. This is all that we know about St. Thomas from the New Testament. However, tradition says that at the dispersal of the Apostles after Pentecost, this saint was sent to evangelize to the Parthians, Medes, and Persians. He ultimately reached India, carrying the Faith to the Malabar Coast, which still boasts of a large native population calling themselves "Christians of St. Thomas."

According to tradition, Thomas was killed in an accident when a fowler shot at a peacock and struck Thomas instead. Following his death, some of his relics were taken to Edessa, while the rest were kept in what is now known as India. They can still be found within the San Thome Basilica in Chennai, Mylapore, India. The relics taken to Edessa were moved in 1258 to Italy, where they can be found in the Cathedral of St. Thomas the Apostle in Ortona, Italy. However, it is believed that Saint Thomas' skull rests in the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the Greek Island Patmos.

In art, Saint Thomas is commonly depicted as a young man holding a scroll, or as a young adult touching the resurrected Christ's wounds. Saint Thomas was mentioned in several texts, including one document called The Passing of Mary, which claims then, that Apostle Thomas was the only one to witness the Assumption of Mary into heaven, while the other apostles were transported to Jerusalem to witness her death. While the other apostles were with Mary, Thomas was left in India until after her first burial, when he was transported to her tomb and he saw her bodily assumption into heaven, when her girdle was left behind. In versions of the story, the other apostles doubted Thomas' words until Mary's tomb was discovered to be empty with the exception of her girdle. Thomas and the girdle were often depicted in medieval and early renaissance art.

Prayer to Saint Thomas the Apostle

    Dear Saint Thomas,

You were once slow in believing that Christ had gloriously risen; but later, because you had seen him, you exclaimed: "My Lord and my God!"

According to an ancient story, you rendered most powerful assistance for constructing a church in a place where pagan priests opposed it.

Please, bless architects, builds and carpenters that through them the Lord may be honored.
